Kirstin Mills is perhaps best known for her imaginative, detailed and emotive paintings of fairies, mermaids, dragons and fantasy subjects. Her work is collected in many countries across the globe in the form of original paintings, prints and a range of inspired gift products from her own online gift stores, as well in the form of licensed merchandise and published mediums from companies who have licensed her work for products such as Art Books, collectible card games, bookmarks and cross-stitch patterns. Most famous are her trademark style of 'miniature dragons' that have appeared in various settings in her work, garnering comments from fans and collectors such as: 'Your dragons are adorable! You have a very unique style that really captures the fantasy genre, its refreshing'; and 'It is such a realistic piece of art, as if it is the most natural thing to see a pet dragon among the tree branches. Every time I look at it I feel that magic is really part of everyday life.'
Such comments seem to intuitively capture Kirstin's ethos and aim when creating her artworks. For her, each painting should be a little window into a realistic world of magic and possibilty and should offer the viewer a new kind of insight through which they are invited to view the world in a different way. The majority of her paintings, from her miniature dragons to her fairies, nature spirits and even mermaids, portray slight magical intrusions into an otherwise normal world, inviting the viewer to look beyond the every day and see the magic that Kirstin feels exists all around us. 'If only one other person walks out into the world and instead of seeing a dry, desolate place, sees somewhere that fairies or goblins could possibly exist, then my work is done' she says.
